Simons Muirhead and Burton LLP recognised for its commitment to The Death Penalty Project

Simons Muirhead and Burton LLP (SM&B) has been shortlisted for the Law Society’s prestigious Excellence Awards, the highest accolade for law firms in England and Wales. The firm has been shortlisted in the Excellence in Pro Bono category for its long-standing support of The Death Penalty Project.

The Death Penalty Project was borne out of a few dedicated lawyers at SM&B who were committed to providing free legal representation in death penalty appeals from the English-speaking Caribbean before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London. More than three decades later, our work has expanded significantly and we now work in more than 30 countries around the world. SM&B has supported our growth into an independent charity and we continue to be housed and supported by the firm.

SM&B’s unwavering support has been essential to the success of The Death Penalty Project – our work simply would not be possible without it. We would like to congratulate SM&B on being shortlisted for this prestigious award and thank the firm for their commitment throughout the years.

Razi Mireskandari, Managing Partner of SM&B and a member of The Death Penalty Project’s board says:

We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this prestigious award. A commitment to providing free legal representation in death penalty cases has been a central part of our firm’s identity since its earliest days. We are immensely proud that our support has helped save the lives of thousands of individuals who might otherwise have been executed. Unfortunately, that work is just as important as it was 35 years ago

Winners will be announced at the Law Society’s Excellence Awards ceremony in London on 17 October 2018.
