Co-Executive Director Invited To Speak at United Nations Expert Meeting In Barbados On The Situation of the Death Penalty

Co-Executive Director Parvais Jabbar has been invited as an international expert to speak at a United Nations meeting on the situation of the death penalty in the English-speaking Caribbean.
The event, co-ordinated by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, is being held on 5-6 October in Bridgetown, Barbados. Parvais will speak about the role of the judiciary on restricting the use of the death penalty in the region, as well as issues relating to human rights and the death penalty, including the right to fair trial, due process and adequate legal representation.
Other speakers include Ms Margarette May Macaulay, Commissioner of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights; Justice Adrian Saunders, Judge of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court; Dr Mai Sato of the University of Reading; and Dr Florence Seemungal of the University of West Indies. Senior government officials from Eastern-speaking Caribbean countries and members of civil society organisations working in the Caribbean region on the abolition of the death penalty have also been invited to attend.
The objective of the expert meeting is to facilitate a substantive and empirical base discussion among senior officials, international and regional experts, civil society activists, and academics on the regional challenges, and to explore potential strategies to advance on the restriction of the death penalty, leading to its eventual abolition.
