'Death Penalty: Transcending the Divide', UNDP Conference, Belarus

  • 10 Mar 2016

The Death Penalty Project has been invited to participate in the UN International Conference, “Death Penalty: Transcending the Divide” in Minsk, Belarus. The conference, held on 10th March 2016, is co-organised by the United Nations Development Programme and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, and supported by the British Embassy in Minsk.

The one-day conference is aimed at bringing together national and international experts to review the use of the death penalty in theory and in practice by means of an impartial multidisciplinary approach towards the application of capital punishment around the world. Policy makers, representatives of civil society, and international development partner will be provided with an opportunity to define a collaborative approach to restrict the use of the death penalty around the world.

Co-Executive Director Parvais Jabbar will address the conference and deliver a presentation on ‘Role of the Courts In Developing Restrictions on the Death Penalty”. Other international participants include, Mr Stavros Lambrinidis (EU Special Representative for Human Rights), Mr Zaved Mahmood (OHCHR Expert on the Abolition of the Death Penalty), Ambassador Nicole Wyrsch (Special Envoy for Human Rights, Federal Department of Foreign Affairs), Mr Robert Dunham (Death Penalty Information Center) and Asunta Vivo Cavaller (International Commission Against the Death Penalty).
