On 3rd – 4th June the DPP was invited to deliver a series of workshops on international standards and the death penalty for Chinese lawyers.
The workshop, co-ordinated by the London-based NGO, The Rights Practice was held in Hong Kong under the auspices of The University of Hong Kong. Co-Executive Director Saul Lehrfreund led discussions on fair trial standards and the protections afforded to those facing the death penalty under international law.
The workshop facilitated international exchange and dialogue on the legal application of the death penalty in China and deepened understanding of the relevance of international principles. We shared our litigation experiences through case vignettes which highlighted the likelihood of miscarriage and wrongful convictions. As a consequence, a heightened level of due process must be applied in capital cases.
