About the Exhibition and Talk Series
The exhibition is built around Article 6 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law – and runs from 6th February to 6th April 2015. The exhibition examines images of political struggle, suffering and victims of violence while considering questions of race, representation, ethical responsibility and the cultural position of the photographer. Presenting more than 300 original prints from the Black Star Collection in New York, the exhibition includes photographs of Civil Rights Movement events such as the Selma to Montgomery march and Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have a Dream’speech. It also features images of independence movements in Africa as well as those of protests and conflicts from the Vietnam War to the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
The talk series is co-sponsored by the law firm Simons Muirhead & Burton.
