*Update* Former Death Row Prisoner in Malawi Released After 13 Years of Incarceration

  • 19 Sep 2016

In April 2015, Tony Thobowa, became the first prisoner under sentence of death in Malawi to be resentenced. He had remained on death row in Malawi since the mandatory death penalty was abolished in 2007.

In April 2015, he became the first of 192 prisoners to have his death sentence reviewed. He was resentenced to 20 years imprisonment (from the date of his arrest) and the Court accepted he was a juvenile at the time of the offence and also took into consideration the 12 years he had endured on death row.

After 13 years of incarceration, in September, Tony was released and collected by his relatives at Mulanje Prison, given his good behaviour in prison and remission of his sentence.
